Ihla Formosa, Portuguese for "Beautiful Island", is the earliest-known Western name for this subtropical paradise.

With nearly two-thirds of its landmass covered by steep mountains and dramatic river valleys, Taiwan is one of the world’s most mountainous countries. Western Taiwan is home to around 90% of the island’s population, leaving the rural East Coast an unspoiled vacation paradise. Indigenous settlements can be found in each region but are concentrated in the foothills and high mountains of the Central Mountain Range, as well as along the coast of Eastern Taiwan. In terms of natural attractions, National Parks and Forest Recreation Areas abound and are located in each region’s mountain areas—including just outside the capital of Taipei! Every region of Taiwan has hot springs, beaches, mountain and forest recreation opportunities and, of course, an abundance of temples.
